In my experience owls eat the heads of chickens. Was one of them gone entirely? So sorry. Predators are the worst. I've lost 4 that way. Once two raccoons, another time a fox (during the day!).

I lost a hen 9/20 ish. I think it was a rat. because I saw a large ( and I mean HUGE) rat running up the out side of one of my coops. To bad all I had was a flashlight.

2nd UPDATE: Y'all that said coon are right. I was outside spraying the aphids off my tomatoes and my chicken started bawking(same bawking as the Squirrels in yard bawking) I thought it was the four wheeler, but I just happened to look at the back of my privacy fence and saw a coon shape with floofy tail walking. I tried to get my 8 yr old really quick to lift her to confirm, but she took too long and they made too much noise. It was gone by the time I got her on my shoulders. It's definitely an adult. Ima start peeing on my fence, hopefully we scared it away for awhile. I feel better knowing qhat I'm battling. Now I gotta catch it and figure out what to do with it.
