My little 1yr old hen that wasnt feeling good a few days ago was attacked by something last night. i found her this morning and i couldnt stay home, i had to be at court for my brother and had to leave right then. i was bawling my eyes out all morning

Peggy started feeling better so i let her in the duck pen last yesterday to 'graze', she was doing good, sunbathing and eating. improved SO much. i left her out since she was roosted last night and early this morning i found her laying up against the side of the pen (kennel) all torn up !!!

something just ripped her little face apart

the only thing that was in with her that could have done ANYTHING was the goose but they get along fine with the chickens.

i am thinking, because of the way she was when i found her that something else got her and tried to drag her out while tearing her apart!!

her whole face is a MESS, half her comb looks dead, i am sure it is. i think she's probably only got 1 eye now...this is the first time anything like this has ever happened and i am just at a LOSS as to what to do.

this same pen was full of small baby ducks and shes the only one that got attacked.

she is still very responsive and i am feeding her vitamins mixed with a little food and water through a syringe.

i gave her a warm bath and washed her face off best i could and covered her comb and head with neosporin. i also had a bottle of lidocaine so i put some of that on too to help with the pain.

what else can i do?

This might sound ugly to hear, but could the chicks have pecked her like that? I just wonder if she actually went down on the ground and they assumed she was dead--I've read over and over on these forums that chickens are cannibals.

She can survive with one eye, but I don't know anything about whether a chicken can survive without its comb. Can it grow back? Can chickens regulate heat in any other way?

Poor girl; I hope you can help her feel better.

she was only in with ducklings and 2 geese, all are friendly with the chickens though. if i have to cull her i am not going to be able to do it myself

i hope i can fix her

I think it was your goose my goose did that to several of my hens,
They even killed one so I sold them.

I dont what to tell you on helping her. But good luck.

no lidocaine, nothing with caine in it. That can kill her if the injuries do not.
let her rest in a warm dark place and check to see if she can eat and drink. I think you are supposed to give electrolytes for shock. dilutes pedealite or gatorade will work if that's all you can find. Yes she can survive without her comb, some breeds are dubbed and they do just fine.

there is a small tooth looking hole in her beak too, could the goose have made that? i know they have tiny little teeth like ridges on their beaks.

she's slurping down the vitamin/food/water mix and sleeping a lot. i dont know what else to do.

see if you can get the lidocaine off, neosporin is okay without the pain reliever. Chickens are amazing healers, sleep is what she needs so give her some time. The eye may only be swollen. How is her breathing? does she seem to be in pain?
edited to add: maybe just use the aviacharge and see how she does.

i tried to use the lidocaine after i put neosporin on, it kind of just rolled down so i dont know that any even got on her. she is sleeping a lot right now.

the eye is closed and sunken in, she tried to open it once but it only cracked open a TINY bit then closed it again.

do i just leave the comb alone? if its dead will it eventually fall off on its own? only the back part is black.

i can deal with my dogs being hurt so much better than birds, this is terrible. at least i know how to fix my dogs
