I was gone for a week on vacation and left my dad to watch my chickens, they seemed to be doing fine. Today’s the first day I got to see them and I noticed something around my roosters ears. These two live together and are separated from the other chickens. I don’t know what it is/what could have caused it or what to do. The vets around us don’t take chickens except for one and every time we’ve gone they’ve never known what to do, please help.

Have you checked for mites? They can sometimes make the skin look funky.
Thank you, I did find mites. I’ve set up an area for them outside so they’re taking a dirt a bath right now and I’ll be doing a deep clean today. We were thinking it might be something fungal though and I was wondering if it would hurt to put some sort of cream on them? It’s alright if your not sure

The earlobes look like they could have normal white spillage coloring, but the area around the ears and on the face look like he has been scratching them. I would also look into his ears and use a QTip and peroxide to clean them and look for ear mites or gunk. If they are very dirty, then you can clean them out and apply some triple antibiotic ointment daily for a few days after cleaning them, to smother the ear mites. Permethrin garden dust can be used to treat regular body mites every 7 days, at least 2-3 times to get the mites and their new eggs as they hatch.

Thank you! I wasn’t sure what to use so this is really helpful

You might try getting some first saturday lime and sprinkling that around. I was dubious but it really helps. On the package they give directions for a kind of whitewash to paint surfaces with also. Would be good for all those little cracks that mites get into. I never used it previously but I got some a few months ago and it's seriously reduced my pest problems in the new coop/run I finished this year. I didn't have a mite problem yet but part of the run isn't covered and I was getting fly and gnat problems and some smell and it knocked both down quickly. They say it also can help with mites and lice.

Does it need to be water down after applying it to the soil? Will it still effective in removing lice/mite? Will it irritate chicken skin/feet?

I got a bag of garden lime, I am not sure how to apply it as I read online that it irritates the skin so I still have yet apply it in my chicken runs.

Thank you, I haven’t heard or this before (I’ve only had chickens for maybe 4 years now), I’ll try the tractor supply store when I go out tonight and if not I’ll order online :)

I don't know about garden lime, it may be an irritant and burn chickens feet. first saturday lime is not an irritant and continues working even if it gets wet, you apply it about once a month as needed.
I quickly checked the internet, Saturday lime is different from garden lime to some degree/formulation. That what the internet says, I am going to wait until I have enough time to do a proper reading of this. In the meantime, forget the lime.
