I keep a variety of breeds and have 7 roosters of crowing age. 1 BR, 2 Del, 2 blk orp, 1 lav amer, 1 Birchen Maran.
Well I was up this AM due to the window being open and their squawking at 5:30. I went out to see what the matter was but it was nothing.
Anyhow I noticed that my Del roosters were not crowing like crazy. In fact I noticed they are the quieter of all the roosters. They do crow of course but are not prone to go on and on and on like the other breeds.
The Amer is the worst I think, followed by the Orps, followed by the Maran, followed by the BR. I do think that it does matter if they can see each other too. Once I let them out, they seem to calm down but not always.
I will mention that my Dels are not hatchery birds either. In fact I did order chicks this year but after seeing them grow out decided NOT to mix them with my line.
So if rooster crowing is a problem you might try a Delaware. Oh by the way I have a hen with two chicks in the lot and they don't seem to bother them at all.
