something is killing my chickens

I have lost two chickens and on Indian Runner duck in three nights. Whatever killed them did not take the eggs. I put a live trap out in the chicken house and I went out there at about 5 in the morning and I did not have anything in the trap but a cat was in the chicken house. Will one cat devour a chicken? And this is happening at night. Just one at a time.

Yes a Cat could.
I would make sure the coop is now feline proof before you loose them all.

Are the birds just gone or are you finding partially eaten bodies?

I am finding bodies, well what is left of them, I mean I really thought it had to be a fox or something like that the way they are tore apart. The first chicken I found had been ripped open and organs were out, the head was still attached, the next one, my duck had been stripped from the neck down not much of anything left of it, and the last one was bones and feathers ripped apart.

Would have had to be a pretty BIG cat to kill a duck.

I don't think it was a cat. I have 14 outside cats and none of them would dare go after one of my bossy hens...

Some of them would go after a young chick though. Forget any of my ducks. They would tear up one of these cats. They hold their own with the big geese even during chow time.

If a cat got into the chicken house a racoon could too.
