Hello, hi..I am new here and I need help please with my hen...here is the iformation.
Ps I saw somebody do a post like this..that’s how I found this site so I decided to try myself.
I have a salmon favorelle and recently she became sick. The day before we noticed she was up and about. Nothing was wrong. I’m very sad and all I ask ifs for somebody to help me figure out what’s wrong. I cannot go to the vet for personal reasons...anyways the day it happened, grandma grabbed her and noticed she couldn’t move. It was like her legs were paralyzed. She felt hot so we put her in a bath with some ice, she drank some. She started to lift her head a little and we were hopeful she was getting better. Then we put her back outside in a cage, separated form the rest of the chickens(in the patio). We fed her some yogurt and water form a syringe but the water dropped out of her beak..as if she wasn’t capable f drinking. She looked as if she was dying. She couldn’t walk but she used her feathers to move a bit. Her feet were practically paralyzed still. Her eyes were partially open but she had an egg that day..which is weird cause we thought she was sick. Next day we hoped she was still alive. Grandpa took her and gave her a bath in the morning. She still couldn’t move and she had diarrhea. She did that twice. She smelled bad..even after the baths but we noticed she pooped and it seeped through the mesh cage on the patio floor and it stunk. We put some brown rice out for her but she wouldn’t eat it, only soft stuff like the yogurt. So we still have her some yogurt(Greek). She looks really tired and she tries to get up but it’s as if something is holding her down and she can barely even move. All she can move is her wings(barely) and her head. This day her eyes were open fully but she looks like she is dying. It all happened in one day and we don’t know what happened to her.
Symptoms(summary)
• legs are extremely weak and can’t move
• can’t lift herself up
•won’t eat solid foods
•looks exhausted
•the water we feed her drips out of her beak
•diarrhea
•poop smells
•she smells
•looks like she’s breathing heavy.
Thank you. Something like this doesn’t happens in one day. What is weird is she was complete Normal the day before it happened. It’s day 2 and really worried she is going to be dead when I check on her in the morning. Please she is the sweetest..I hate to see her gone.. that you so much. The other chickens seem sad and worried, too.

I don't know if this will help you or not, but did you say she was free ranging? It may be something she ate, and if that's the case, I'm afraid there's not much you can do but make her comfortable. We had the same thing happen to one of our hens a few years ago, and we believe that she ate some insecticide or something that was around in our yard. She was gone within a day. We no longer have anyone putting chemicals in our yard, or when we have our pest control guys come out (we have all woods on two sides of our yard), we don't let the chickens out until we have had a good rain.
I'm sorry I don't have anything that could really help you :(.

Hello, I hadn’t mentioned she was free ranging but yes she is in our backyard. We did use a spray a couple of weeks ago to kill the flies around the coop but that was weeks ago. It does last up to 6 months....well, Thank you for trying to help me..it means a lot :)

Just Incase if she did get poisoned by an insecticide, do you know what could be the symptoms(I’ve searched..everywhere) and anything that could possibly help her get better, if possible?...also I’m sorry for your loss :(

Please don’t give her another cold bath; it could kill her (sadly, I know from experience). I would bring her inside where it is quiet and warm. Do you have poultry vitamins?

Have you looked her over carefully for injury, like from a predator, or fly strike? (maggots in a wound or in/around her vent).

I believe insecticide poisoning has neurological symptoms, which sounds possible in your case. How does her crop feel? You mentioned liquid dripping out of her beak, so I am wondering if she is backed up. An avian vet is always best, but if that’s not an option, let’s see if it’s not too late to save her. If you suspect poisoning, it might be worth trying activated charcoal, if you have that on hand. You could mix it with the yogurt and swipe a little in the edge of her beak to see if she can swallow it in her own. Take care not to aspirate her.

Sadly, based on her symptoms, it does not look good. However, if she is still with us, I hope we can help you. Good luck and keep us posted.
