Ive recently noticed one of my orpingtons acting strange around the water bowl. She was walk in circles around it with her mouth in the water. Today i picked her up and opened her mouth to find a weird yellowish thing on the inside of her mouth. It smells and looks quite "grainy". Thats the only way i can explain it.

Has anyone got any ideas of what it is and how to treat it? Ive been searching around but cant seem to find what it is. Sorry the pictures arent that clear i couldnt get a decent shot...

Welcome to BYC. I am no expert, but I think that it looks like canker (Trichomoniasis). If it is canker, you'll need to treat it with metronidazole (Flagyl) which can be purchased without a prescription as Fish-Zole (250mg metronidazole) and Meditrich (100mg metronidazole). According to the AAAP Avian Disease Manual, treatment is Metronidazole 30mg/kg by mouth for five days. If you can, consult a veterinarian.

FYI, metronidazole is banned for use in food animals. And if it's not canker, it could be yeast. Treatment for yeast would be Nystatin.

BTW, Give yourself a pat on the back for actually looking in your hen's mouth, I think many people might have missed that!

One last comment... If you do go to the vet, ask him/her to teach you how to tube feed, they should do that for free.
