I recently bought a polish chick about 4 weeks old, I had her separated from my 10 week olds. She was in a cage in the run, I put some wooden boards around the cage to keep her weather protected and didn't think much else about it, we live in a neighborhood lots of houses and dogs and my yard is fenced in and the coop run is about 6 1/2 foot with chicken wire...I thought she would be safe.
I was wrong went outside this morning and feathers everywhere, there was no body but some feathers on top of the corner post. I'm assuming whatever it was grabbed her from her roost pulled her through the bars and climbed back out over the run. Was it a raccoon? I was heartbroken and can't stand to lose any of my older babies I have put chicken wire over top of the run and secured it tightly to prevent the chicken killer from climbing back over. And my coop is off the ground all latches are too high up for any animal to reach and the coop door slides shut and would be pretty difficult to slide open. My biggest concern is something digging under, my grandmother doesn't want me digging up her yard anymore so I can't bury anything but is there some other way to make it hard to dig under? I was thinking about taking cinderblocks and lining the outside of the run with those and maybe laying wire underneath them but not in the ground...I don't know I want my girls to be safe I'm so nervous about them being out there tonight. I will take any advice anyone can give.
