They say a raccoon can open anything a three year old child can. So a locking mechanism for your lid is essential. I think a weasel could get under your coop too from the sounds of it, or even a snake. If you are only keeping two or three hens why not buy a small secure chicken tractor that you can move around the yard?

I have a chicken coop that's 2 stories, covered in hardware cloth and all latches have clips on them so racoons can't open them. At night I shut the coop up and turn on the electric fence. I have 5 inch extension insulators on all corners and run the wire about 4 inches off the ground-it completely encircles the coop, including the door. I've had a couple of skunks get zapped over the last year when they got up to the coop and of course started sniffing around for a way to get in. ZZZZZZAP !!!! The solar fencer is for 5 miles of fence. It covers 25 feet. Quite a zap outta the thing.
