Something killed.....

That just sucks!!!
I'm sorry for the loss of the birdies...
Sounds like a raccoon to me also...my only predator loss was one of those masked bandits.
I put her in a cat cage and bring her in until you catch said predator...

Sounds like the work of a weasle, they will eat just the heads. I would invest in a trap.

I just can't believe this after all the trouble and hard work you've put into this.
So sorry for all of you. Darn those possums/racoons/weasels.
BIG hug.....

Thanks everyone....this is hard to believe for me too trust me.....I've been accused by my wife of obsessing over the chickens during this whole time going back to the first time they were here.....

Anyway.....

I have the one hen that's left in a cardboard box in my kitchen....she was just standing around this afternoon.....really adds to the sadness of the whole thing.....

We're going out later (when my wife gets home) to find a cat carryer thing so at least she can see out.....at that time I'll probably move her to the basement depending on the smell (never had a chicken inside).....I'm plannning to let her out in the daytime and back inside at night.....

Mr. Dad, Get youself a live bait trap! Do not think that you have the problem solved when you catch one of whatever this is that is killing your chickens. Chances are there are more than one. I have had my live bait trap close to three years now. I've caught about 100 possums. No joking! I keep my trap baited and set all of the time, year around. Thank God I have my trap. Now my birds are fine. Johnny

I am always upset to find any of my birds destroyed. But I was never so mad as when my small son went out to the chickens and discovered one with its insides torn out and its head eaten off. I will never forget that little fellows scream of horror at seeing such a sight. That made me so angry and determined to capture the wild critters who had done this. I was so hurt for him that he saw.

Don't get discouraged.

I'm so sorry this has happened to you. Believe me, it happens to all of us so we know how you feel.

Thanks again.....it is a lesson for me in a few ways....and a lesson for my kids....I explained that this may happen again someday but there are ways we can try and prevent it......

'Decker' made it through the night in the basement fine.....we were able to get a medium cat carrier which isn't reall roomey but she can turn around, and see out etc. she is roaming the yard now.....

It's looking like the property we had found is going to fall through so we are talking about staying here and paying it down somemore....we don't have it too bad.....but was once the country is changing.....

So saying that once my daughters Bday party is past (tomorrow, we had to cancel due to weather last Sunday) I'm building a real coop....and getting 'Decker' a few friends.......in the mean time I'm going to try to get her use to going into the carrier at night and I'll put her in the basement as added security....

I agree, Here in Australia we get foxes (wolves) in our backyards in the early spring when they have cubs.
I have been a victim of "fox strike" its very sad and your heart breaks and you walk around like a lost soul beating yourself up. please get better soon.

You need to protect the survivor and look after her indoors in a laundry perhaps. Then get your coop very secure so you know that it wont happen to you again, you can do it . also now would be a nice time for 3 of you to get a nice friend for the lonely chook. Good Luck
