something NEW in my coop!!!!

Speaking about chickens laying their egg just about anywhere: Before I purchased my chicks this spring at the feedstore (Buchheit's) I observed the laying hens they had for sale, mixed in an approximately 8 X 8 cage with various roosters. The poor girls were squatting down and laying anywhere and everywhere. There were eggs just mixed into the shavings on the floor, being kicked around and pooped on. For some reason, that made me feel really bad for the hens, like they were having to do their private business there for all the gawking humans to see. ("What do you mean, Anthropomorphising?"

So your the one that started the hole in the knee thing!!

Love the picture, looks like my childhood!

digitS' :

Goldie', my first hen was named Goldie.

That was partly because she was gold and partly because she was given to me by my grandmother. Lots of people called my grandmother, "Goldie"

You can see a picture of my 1st chicken taken waaaay back in the Pleistocene, when I was a kid. The picture is on my BYC page.

I too have 6 chicks and 3 nest boxes and all the chicks lay in the same box too!! Each waiting their turn for the box!!! Do I discourage this (I'm afraid they will break the eggs and then eat them!)? How do I get them to lay in another box? Or just don't worry about it?

i dont think i would worry about them laying in the same box...i had 5 eggs in one box...they were all fine.....its the ones
NOT in the box you have to worry about!!!!......put a golf ball in the other boxes...maybe they will get the hint and lay there!

Been there done that! Went to collect eggs a few weeks ago and one of my new layers left me a present under the hanging feeder. That crunch is so one of a kind you just know it couldn't be anything but an egg. Found one in the run last week as well as one next to the inside waterer which is right below the nest boxes. So you are not alone

I often get 8 or 9 in one spot.... six feet of nest boxes, and they fight for the corner! I have one, Crazy Chicken, she jumps at the wall all day

and then lays her egg at the door. Other than that one mildly imbalanced leghorn, they have it figured out pretty well. The only broken eggs are the ones I break lol
