Something was hanging from my duck's butt-and it's not an egg!

I don't think my hubby would go for another female right now. He would really rather wait until our big, nice coop is finished this fall/early spring next year. Right now the pair are getting along great. They don't appear to ever fight and I see no marks on the neck of the female. As long as they keep this up, is it ok? I don't want to stress her, but the "drake" is very laid back, he does get a bit nippy at us (never hurts, we just pick him up and turn him around and he walks away.)

I have kept a male female pair for a while. It was okay because our drake is pretty mellow as drakes go. But I kept a close eye on him and on her too. Ideally, if you get your coop done before spring that might be a good time to get another one or two girls. By next spring he could be mature enough to really keep after a lone female and then there might be problems. Each one is different, you have to do what is right for your situation and ducks.

Yes I would like to get another female duck now that one is a male. I have no idea how old this drake is, he is a rescue found on the streets in town. Someone probably dumped him :( They are so cute together, if one is separated from the other, they quack and cry until reunited :)

According to what he looks like....he isn't very old. My bets are once he got out of that "cute and fuzzy" stage they dumped him

Oh my gosh, that is terrible someone would do that! Good though he is young like the duck I have (she was born this spring the farmer told me.) I saw that same mysterious dangling object from his butt again just now and I am convinced it is a drake :) I don't want to sound gross, but it wasn't as corkscrewed as the one in the picture. We changed their names to Frank (the KC) and Shirley (the WH)

THANK YOU to everyone who has responded and helped me out. You all are just awesome and quite helpful!

I saw "it" again and I am now convinced it is NOT a worm...lol. It is a boy!!! His name is Frank and the WH name is Shirley :) Guess I might have some babies in the future.

Yeah and now I'll have the worry of taking care of little ones! Eeek! I think I have quite a while yet as the WH has not even laid a single egg as she was born sometime this spring.

actually you dont HAVE to let them be set and hatched. Just collect the eggs daily and use for eating/baking as normal. Just because an egg is laid does not mean it must be incubated and hatched.
