Something wrong here?

Hi all!

Just wanted some advice. Chook Norris here seems to have inflamed ears(?) with white bits. I have no idea if this is just normal or whether there might be some kind of fungal or other infection. Be very grateful if someone could check the pics and give some advice, if needed. Clearly I am very amateur!

Is it both earlobes? Likely it's color leakage if she's hatchery. I have a couple of hatchery birds whose earlobes are turning whiter as they age.

That said, it won't hurt one bit to apply an anti-fungal cream (athlete's foot cream) or coconut oil to the earlobe if you feel that it might be fungal. Favus (a fungal infection) does show as white crusty matter on birds, but generally starts with the comb.

Thanks a lot Wyorp. Out of interest why would it make a difference if it was hatchery? I have had a look at Fuvus - not impossible it is an initial stage of that. She is about 7 months old if relevant and appears very healthy otherwise.

As a beginner I am mainly comparing her lobes to the other chooks, whose lobes are smaller and less protruding. Does not look scabby at all. Think I will monitor for another week or so and if no change or gets worse take your advice and apply some anti fungal.

Edit: yes, the whitening and "inflammation" is on both ear lobes. Sorry, half of the pics are absolutely atrocious. She would make a terrible model, can't pose for ****!

Good morning, and welcome to BYC. Keep an eye on them, but I think it is just normal ear lobe coloration. She appears to be in great condition.

She is a pullet. No worries there. And I agree that her ears are fine. The issue with hatchery stock is that they are far from being bred true to standard so you can have all types of flaws in the various breeds from comb type to feather color to skin color.
