I just noticed this today but our hen looks wrong
400
it lookes like she layed on an egg but the festhers are missing. She has been acting fine and i washed off the eggy stuff with a wash cloth. Please what is wrong? The feathers are just kinda gone. She smells bad to but i think it is the egg.

Is she broody?

To quote wikipedia:

A brood patch is a patch of featherless skin that is visible on the underside of birds during the nesting season. This patch of skin is well supplied with blood vessels at the surface making it possible for the birds to transfer heat to their eggs when incubating. In most species the feathers in the region are shed automatically but ducks and geese may pluck the feathers and use them to line the nest. The feathers of the region regrow soon after the eggs hatch in the case of precocial birds but may be delayed in those birds having altricial young.

If it's huge and smelly it could be broody poop.

You said that you had to wash eggy stuff off of her? Any possiblity she was trying to brood and broke an egg?

Thank you so muck. We found a crushed egg. And she has been sitting on the eggs longer. We also just got some chicks and she is obsessed with them. Thank you so much. She is my little girl and has had a pretty hard life until we got her. She just started laying too so i was worried.
