So I just got few new feeders and waterers. I put the one of the feeders together and put it out with food in it. I figured they should figure it out pretty quick since their other feeder is a port style feeder that I made with a bucket. The new one is one of the metal ones with legs (I'm hoping it'll deter mice).

Anyway, I set it outside and a few wandered around it some jumped on top, others wouldn't come near it, lol. I tapped the outside edge of the port, no dice. I walked away and decided they'd figure it out eventually.

I went back out 10-15 minutes later to check on progress and most of the chickens were gathered around it squawking and carrying on, but no one was eating.

I decided to stick my hand in the port, pull out food and show them it was in there. As it turned out I forgot to remove the covers after filling the feeder.

I'm pretty sure that they were trying to explain to you that you'd left the covers on. :)
I'm sure they were. I just never listen, lol.

Edit: yes I have full blown conversations with my chickens. My son has given up on asking who I'm talking to, lol. If i go full blown nuts and wander around talking to myself, no one will notice.

We had a large 75 gal. Fish tank years ago in a wooden cabinet. We asked my niece to come feed them while we were on vacation, which she did daily. It didn’t occur to us to tell an adult that there was a glass lid under the wood lid, those poor fish had to stare up at the food piled up on the glass out of reach for over a week.

When we moved, we gave the fish tank to her family. I’m assuming she’s figured it out by now…

And they lived?

Glad I'm not the only one! Every. Single. Day. 🤣

It does backfire on occasion when I tell to take out the trash or do the dishes. He'll say . . oh i thought you were talking to the chickens, lol. It was so funny I couldn't even get mad
