Hey all, our son broke a window on accident... anyways, there are small pieces on the ground and in the ivy (where they love to go at times and lay)... we got as much up as we could see and find... Will it hurt the chickens if they get ahold of a piece that we missed??? What do I do???

hard to say, in my coopp, theres little pieces of beer bottles from the people who used to live here before.. and old medicine bottles.. it hasnt hurt my chickens yet.. i hope all turns out well for you and your chickens.

That depends on how much staff is in your soil. I have had a really awful time with bumblefoot this summer, probably partly due to the hot moist weather being the best breeding ground for the bacteria. The former owner of this place had numerous burn piles and glass keeps perking to the top. When the birds scrape or cut their feet and get bacteria in the abrasion, staff takes up residence and causes pus to form. That's the only health problem I've ever had with my birds. One girl, who is about 20 months old, has had it off and on most of her life. She lives in a pink bandage and had had multiple surgeries on her foot to drain the infection. This is something you do NOT want to deal with if you can avoid it, let me tell you. Suede, due to his massive body and clumsiness, used to slide/fall down the ramp and he broke one of the crosspieces, cutting his foot on the screw sticking up. We operated on it and put a dressing on him. Even he is wearing a pink bandage right now, poor boy.

you must have bought from the same HILLBILLIES that I did thought that the woods was thierown personal junkyard, cleaned most of it up but chickens still dig up broken glass and bottles on occasion, but most of those have ben there for years so edges are not sharp

I would get as much of the glass up as you can if it sparkles the chicks will find it though

just as your foot can get a little sliver of glass in it, the same can happen to your chickens...and then bumblefoot will follow. If it were me (even if I had to dig up the grass) I would remove the top layer to ensure this did not happen...bumblefoot is truly horrible...

I wish I could, Diana, but this is wooded acreage and I don't even know where all the burn piles are. They were all over the place-it puzzled me no end as to why there was pile here and another one there then another one somewhere else and all had glass bottles thrown in them. Idiots! I've lived here five years and tilled the chicken pens and removed soil over and over and still, the girls will dig up another piece of glass inside their pen! And that doesn't count the times when they're freeranging through the briars (cowvine, aka, greenbriar), brambles (blackberries), sharp sandstone ledges, etc. I would not wish my experiences with bumblefoot on anyone-it's truly horrendous. I bet you money that many people have chickens with bumblefoot and dont even know it, never know it, even if the bird drops dead from it going systemic.

They will probably be fine but there will still be the risk of broken pieces which can cause bumble foot. My birds range on places with lots of junk... but they have done fine.

Thanks all... I will be sure to keep and eye on the chickies... We have searched the area throughly!!! I know there are still those little itty bitty teeny pieces that I just can not see nor get up.... what I did... I pulled all the ivy up.... shook it really good... searched... picked up everything I could see... even dirt that was questionable... and then layed the ivy back down... I am lucky and only 4 hens go in that area and luckily for me... I tell them apart from the others... so I will be sure to keep an eye out on those and the others too... but those four deffinatly...

Yah I have a hillbillie brother in law... DUMB A** alcoholic who does give a chit and throws his beer bottles where ever... I yell at him all the time but it doesnt seem to do no good!!! He has now been banded from the property... for stealing... UGG... anyways... I am constantly finding broken glass everywhere because of that *&^%#@ but the chickens are not where that glass is so thats a good thing...

What is bumble foot??? guess I have to research that one now LOL...

Anyways, thanks all for the information I appreciate it!!!
