Does anyone have a link to pictures of bumble foot?
I don't know what the bottom of a chickens foot is supposed to look like (only have had chickens for about a month now), so I wouldn't know bumble foot if I saw it.

Now I will have to go look at the bottom of my chickens feet tomorrow. I have three roosts all made out of young pine trees with bark still on them. Do any of you think the bark will be too rough for their feet? Also, one of the roosts is about, I'll guess, 4 feet off the ground. Is this too high for BO's and a white giant?

About the glass...
Where my main run is, is the site of an old homeplace that burned. I tried to garden it for a couple of years and wore knee-pads when I was there. Glass shards are everywhere (melted and unmelted) , the chickens constantly scratch up new pieces. I can pick up a pocketfull every time I walk thru the yard. I've only had one bird with a cut foot and I'm not certain it was from 'yard glass', I think she cut it on a screw point on the pop-door (I used a too-long screw by mistake. LOL, I didn't think there was such a thing

.
The bumblefoot sounds like a nasty thing to deal with.

What it usually looks like is a black round callous on the bottom of the pad. Many times if you cut around the edge of that and lift it off, you will either get liquid pus or a solid pus plug will start to lift out. This is very nasty and you dont want it on you! We've done so many surgeries, salt soaks, treatments, antibiotics (none of which work for one particular hen), etc over the last year, that we are sick and tired of it. I figure we just must have alot of staff in our soil here and this summer weather has made it bloom.
Here is a thread from another forum on treating it that is excellent:

We also deal with glass. Our place has never had a home up where our house is, but people dumped scrap in the woods for decades. Glass is a never-ending problem.
I keep a bucket on the side of our riding mower and will stop and pick up any shiny thing I see when I mow. I have about a half a bucket of glass every time I mow the top acreage. We grow glass better than grass, lol.

Jess - LOL sounds familier...

Cyn - thanks so much for your information, you are the best and very knowledgeable!!! Glad to have a friend like you!!!

Everyone else... thank you very much... I am thankful to all of you for sharing with me and others... Being new to the mommy role of chickens... I get real worried at the drop of a hat if something happens... Im always telling the kids... pick that up... the chickens will get ahold of it and get sick!!! ie.. tools, batteries, gas cans... Landon our 12 yr old machanic is always working on something... and always leaving something out!!! LOL... poor kid probably thinks I am the wicked step mother from hell!!! LOL

Cynthia, have you tried doing that disinfecting thing in your run, with the bleach water with white vinegar in it, sprayed from a sprayer? I wonder if that would cut down on the amount of staph in the dirt. I read about it in another post here, talking about e.coli & salmonella. I haven't done it yet, but it's on my list. Our chickens are always scratching up glass here too. Clear, brown, blue, all kinds of pretty colors! What's up with these idiots who think you can throw a beer bottle in a burn pile, of just normal trash, and it will be hot enough to melt? Duh!

We have the same kind of problem up here, Cynthia. There are a lot of trees, and a lot of glass and metal.

To anyone with this problem, the best solution is patience and vigilance. Take the weekends to wander the yard, look for anything that you might be worried about, and designate a container to throw it into until you can have it disposed of.

This problem is why I try to wear loose-fitting pants with pockets. I just pick it up and put it in my pocket and I usually end up with several things I've found from glass to rusty screws, nails, bullet shell casings, etc. I've been picking up this crud for five years and I bet I'll be doing it for years to come. I can see nothing and a new piece of glass will just be laying there. It's unbelievable what people will try to burn!
I have tried to spray bleach/ limed the run/etc. I need to redo it with stronger bleach and hydrated lime instead of the pulverized limestone I used (because it was left by the former owner's family). My coops and pens are pretty clean for chicken coops. Kyle's been here and he probably could tell I keep it pretty well in order. I hate it when someone tells me it's bad sanitation and I know darn well it isnt in my situation. Staff is everywhere and I think this awful weather we had just made it multiply. Maybe winter will kill the bacteria off and the girls can recover and get a break. I feel so bad, cutting on their feet all the time. My poor Violet, one of the SLWs, has had it most of her life now. She just can't shake it and she's had every antibiotic known to the chicken world, I think, two or three times even. I just quit it because they didnt work and I thought the poor girl might start to glow in the dark, LOL. I don't wish this problem on anyone. At least, it isn't a contagious thing from bird to bird, just a foot infection, but what a
of an infection it is!
