Soon to be chicken mom

I've been thinking about getting a small flock for a while, and a friend of my son's ordered some chicks and had to get more than he really wanted...so I'm getting some chickens! I already have two dogs and a cat and one of my dogs - a border collie cross - has already unfortunately killed and eaten one of my neighbor's chickens, so I'll be watching her carefully and making sure the chickens are safe. I live in South Florida and luckily keeping them warm is not a problem for me. Looking forward to learning more about them!

Before moving to Wyoming, I lived in south FL and north FL. One thing you will have to handle is the heat you get down south. A lot of coop ventilation, shade (natural or man-made), cooling treats, a box fan...things like that can go a long way to keep your flock from over heating.

Please DO something about your dog. In many areas folks are allowed to shoot/kill any dog attacking their livestock, chickens etc. Maybe you will need to get a shock collar and work with her, or keep her confined behind an electrified fence/pen. Or give her up.
