Soon to be first time chicken mom

-Most prefabs are small and not sturdy and do not hold as many chickens as they say
-Build your own or renovate a shed
-Chicken wire holes are too big and it’s flimsy so use hardware cloth
-Proper Ventilation is key
-Make it tall enough to walk in so you don’t have to bend over when you go in there
Nice to meet you!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

Never buy a pre-fab coop.
Coops needs many sq feet of permanently open ventilation, not sq inches.

Chickens need 4 sq ft of floor space and 1 linear foot of roost space per bird and 1 nest box per 4-5 hens. The run should offer an additional 15 sq ft of space per bird and you should have lots of stuff in the run for the birds to engage themselves.

Chicken wire does NOTHING to protect chickens. Use 1/2" hardware cloth to secure ventilation and windows in your coop and at least the bottom 4' of your run.

Overcrowded chickens are stressed animals and can and will resort to cannibalism out of frustration. They need space. Overcrowding also leads to disease and makes it harder to keep things odor free.

All great advice above. Unfortunately chickens don't come with a manual. BYC is the closest thing to a book, it's always easier to learn from others mistakes, successes and everything in between. Best wishes on this poultry journey!
