Hi! We are looking to add a few chickens to our "family". Where is the best to buy new chicks? Also, we live where coyotes are seen on a daily basis. How best to build a coyote-proof enclosure? I am looking at Wyandotte, Speckled Sussex, Australorp or Favaucana. I'd like one that is very people friendly and a good layer, good in a cold climate in winter, hot in summer - beauty is a plus. Thanks for any info!

The best place for me to buy my chicks is my local feed store. And the breeds I would recommend would be Australorps and and Black Sex Links. That's all the info I have for you!:)

Hi Shelley and welcome to BYC - glad that you have joined us. I'd suggest checking out the Breeds section for further inspiration. The Coops section and "coops and runs" forum should also give you some ideas as to how best secure your birds from coyotes and other predators.

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre - https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center, and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - another place where you can ask about what breeds thrive in your area. - https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you

All the best
