That's what I was thinking, a roo. I was also wondering how old they are. I thought that they would be a couple days old, but with all those feathers, are they older? Plus, they are big and heavy like they've been eating for at least a week or two.
I see nothing to really compare their size against, but you keep mentioning how big they are, how they're eating, and how heavy they are, and it makes me wonder if you don't have Cornish X birds.
Can you take a pict with your hand near them, or something for comparison?
Do you know the difference in a BO, and a CornishX? If so, forgive me for mentioning it.
They are cuties! And I love your brooder, with the perch!
No, I know nothing about chickens other than what I have been reading the last couple of months. They could be cornish X, I wouldn't know!
I think the reason that they look so big to us is because the only other chick we have had was sickly and it never did really grow. It didn't have any feathers, still had it's egg tooth and looked about the same size it was when it was born and weighed nothing at a week when it died. So, no wonder we think these ones are so robust and healthy! Also, I was thinking that the chicks would only be a couple days old coming from the hatchery, but I think that they are older because they have such great feathering on their wings, but as I said, I know very little. They are probably growing as they should, I just don't know how old they are.
I've taken a new pic, well several, but I won't put you through all of them. I put a 500ml widemouth mason jar in there for comparision. The chicks are actually taller than the jar when they are not crouched down as in the pic. They are loving their new brooder and now have had a taste for bugs. The kids love it when the chicks go beserk over the bugs!
Thanks! No, it doesn't have any stripes down it's back, but the BO ones do. They have a very light stripe going right down the spine. This one just has more of the solid reddish brown that's on it's head.
I'll make a guess at ages. Around 5 days old.
Based on what kinds of feathering they have. At about 2 wks some might be getting tail and back feathers, so probably not that old. And at 1-2 days old, you wouldn't see much in the wing as you noted.
The 3 big ones actually do have tail feathers, about 3/4 inch long. Maybe the darker one is younger or it is a runt? I love runts! Could it be that I'm not even 5 feet tall, lol!
Buff orph. should have white legs and be a solid butter color. No markings of any kind. I bought 100 this Spring from Mt. Healthy. They grow fast and are so gentle and easy to raise together. No feather picking or fighting much at all.
