Hi BYC members. One of my bantam frizzles has a sore eye which seems to be getting worse. I noticed about a week ago that she wasn't her usual self. When I looked more closely at her, I saw that she had what appeared to be bruising just above her eye.. like a red patch ( you can see in the photo). Her eye was slightly closed. On the next day I saw one of my other hens peck her and it seemed as though it hit the mark, right in the eye. I have removed her and given antibiotic eye drops from the vet and administered anti biotic drops orally just in case of infection. I have done this for 5 days. However, despite this the eye seems to have almost got worse. She has a yellow crust around it and will not open it at all, whereas before she did open it. Any ideas? I am most upset, she is such a sweet little thing and I am a bit lost as to what course of action to take. Will more than likey take her off to the vet tomorrow but wondering if any one has had a similiar experience and could offer some advise. Thanks in advance. Just took a photo and she has opened it a bit.

It's possible that this may just be a peck injury with a possible infection or abscess, but swelling around an eye in chickens can sometime mean a respiratory disease such as MG or coryza. Chickens will peck at things, and it's hard to tell if the other chicken pecked her first because she was acting sick, or pecked her hurt eye. Does she have any bubbles or foam inside the eye? For respiratory infections, Tylan 50 injectable, Gallimycin, and Tetracyclines are used for treatment. MG and coryza are both chronic carrier diseases. If the vet is available I would go. Here is some reading about the respiratory diseases: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044

Thanks for the information. I did go to the vet… I am his best customer!! She had a high fever, so she went on antibiotices and had a topical cream for the eye. The eye healed within a week.
