Sorry, yes there is some PMS involved.

I deleted the original post because I got slammed and told I should apologize to the hatchery owner. My original post was mostly about finding out about how he uses antibiotics on all of his chickens and changes them out regularly, so by the time a pullet is 6 weeks old it has probably been on 2 or 3 different antibiotics. Some people here defended his practices, I "APOLOGIZED" to the hatchery owner in absentia, because he's not on here, and by the way I never mentioned his name or location. I posted originally with the intent to basically alert newbies (LIKE ME!) to the fact that even "local hatcheries" (not big mail-order operations) might do some things that some of us disagree with, such as feeding antibiotics to otherwise healthy chickens. And putting bleach in their water.

Yes it was a "local hatchery". No there was no guarantee in writing. It was a BUSINESS, a named hatchery, not "some guy selling chickens".

I bashed his way of raising chickens, got called on it, and APOLOGIZED. Yet I continued to get bashed for being a "know-it-all".

So I deleted the original post bashing his practices of medicating his chickens and putting bleach in their water, because apparently people wouldn't let it go even after I APOLOGIZED FOR BASHING WHAT IS APPARENTLY AN ACCEPTABLE PRACTICE. And yes, I'm yelling that one, because apparently there are some people who MISSED MY APOLOGIES.

I bought chickens back in March/April and things were very different then. We had more money then, we had more prospects then, and I had the time to raise chicks. When I got 8 roos instead of 8 pullets, that really hit me hard. Now we can't afford to just "chalk it up to a lesson learned" without at least ASKING for a fair/reasonable replacement that WE CAN DO.

Replace 3 month old roos with pullets? Can't quarantine. We don't have the space. (Plus part of my original objection to medicating birds so heavily without cause, I don't like the idea of getting birds that have been on 2-3 different antibiotics at the tender age of 6-8 weeks old). But even if the board said "don't worry about the antibiotics, just give some probiotics and the birds should be fine", that STILL doesn't address the quarantine issue. So does the board say "don't worry about quarantine"? I think not...

So replacing with pullets is not an option.

Replacing with chicks? HE DOESN'T HAVE ANY. EVERYONE CATCH THAT? HE HAS NONE. If he DID offer me this option, which he hasn't because I haven't heard back from him yet, it would take him 3 weeks to get a hatch going, which would be 50% boys, and he would then have more chicks to deal with, etc. so I don't think he will even offer to do this. Besides, I am not in a position to raise another batch of chicks because I'm HOPING to get some work which would involve travel. So my "window of opportunity" seems to have passed. Yes, I'm sorely disappointed. No, I'm not mad at the hatchery guy.

So replacing with chicks is also not an option (apparently).

It's not just "I don't want to take pullets" or "I don't want to start over with chicks". It's I CAN'T take pullets and quarantine them properly. And I CAN'T get chicks from him because he doesn't even HAVE ANY.

So what are my options? Money back - I spent $20 on the chicks and then fed them for 3 months to discover that the pets that I spent the money and time on with some expectation of being able to supplement my household with eggs are ROOSTERS and will never lay an egg. Not only do I have to get rid of the chickens that I spent hours sitting in front of the TV with them on my lap, but I'm out the time and money, and don't have the opportunity to start over again at this point. I can't get 3 months worth of laying time back even if some chicks magically appeared on my doorstep tonight, which they won't. And by the way, did I mention that I have no way to quarantine pullets?????

I have been bashed to death in here over the <gasp> GALL that I would have to ASK for $40 worth of feed in exchange for my roos. Good grief, people, I'm just talking about ASKING - I'm not talking about "if he doesn't give me $40 worth of food I'm going to take him to small claims court". But many of you on this board have jumped "on the side of" the seller, saying that I'd be lucky if I got anything back, I should just chalk it up to "lesson learned". Well I'm sorry if I am somewhat of an idealist and I think that life SHOULD be fair, even though I know it's not always and I might not get what I want. I don't understand why everyone is BASHING me at the MERE THOUGHT of me ASKING this guy for $40 worth of feed.

I apologize for the rant, and yes as I said there is some PMS involved, sorry about that, but DANGIT don't bash me after I've apologized for the original offense MORE THAN ONCE and then BASH ME SOME MORE for talking about making a reasonable request. Heck, on my poll someone mentioned selling the roos for $5 each on Craigslist. If they are worth $5 each, then doesn't that mean they are WORTH $40? So why should it be that big of a deal to ASK for $40 worth of feed for them?

I'm sorry that I insulted what is apparently a commonly accepted way of managing poultry flocks. I'm sorry that I got upset with some of the responses. I felt hurt and piled on after I apologized for my apparent offense. I feel like I have suffered a loss, and the hatchery guy is sitting pretty, and I can't understand the board sentiment that it would be unreasonable to ASK for $40 worth of feed for the roos.

And mostly I'm sorry that my husband got on here and posted in the other thread. I'm changing my password.
