A hawk went after my chicks while I had them in an enclosure outside... My husband and I were about 3 feet away. I thought everyone was fine because we shooed the hawk off, but I just went to check on them and the one that is usually most active and aggressive (may be a roo) was under the heat, which she never is. I took her out and found out she has a wound under her wing (see photo). Any advice is greatly appreciated! It is a Green Queen and about 6 weeks old.

Welcome to the site, sorry about Your chick. Separate from the flock and take somewhere (inside away from flies and dirt if she’s outside) warm, dim and quiet. Immediately treat for shock with electrolytes and some sugar water mixed in. Something like Gatorade room temp will work, too. Home made solutions can be googled. You may have to dribble some on her break with a dropper or dip her beak in it to get her interested. Check her over well for any other injuries.

The injury looks significant, the experts tagged will be able to help more than I could there. But I know to get started, rinse the wound with saline and gather any first aid supplies you have such as triple antibiotic ointment without pain relief.

Thank you so much!! I appreciate the help

Hawks can exert a lot of power when they hit a chicken, so hopefully, there won’t be any internal injuries. I would keep the wound clean, and spray it twice a day with saline or a wound spray, and follow that with plain Neosporin triple antibiotic ointment until it heals. Leave it open to air. Watch for signs of infection. I would bring a flock member in to visit once or twice a day behind a dog crate so she can’t peck the wound.

You’re welcome, how is she doing?
She is doing great! I separated her in a large storage tote and when I came back to check on her she had flown up to perch on the side. I made an electrolyte mix and egg yolk but she insisted on eating regular food LOL. I cleaned her up and she has a full crop. I put another one of my girls in there who is very calm and sweet. So hopefully they get some good rest and the wound starts to heal. Thank you for checking in!

I hope so too! I used the wound spray, just need to follow up with antibiotic ointment. Thank you so much!
