SOS Polish almost pecked to death, is there any way to prevent this?

Sounds just like my story. My poor little polish friend has been pecked bloody. She lives by herself next to the banty hens I have. She is very social and loves being with the other birds but it just doesn't work out. I even put her in with my banty hens and they pecked her.

She free ranges with the other birds in the evening and loves it and they are so busy foraging and doing all their chicken rituals that they don't bother her.

Sounds like my story also I have 5 crested 3 WC Black Polish 1 Silver and 1 Blue they all have to be in there own pen my DH had to build because I could not stand to see them picked (pecked) on and I put everything on there heads to no avail. So now they are all very happy in there own Roost/Pen they also get up later and go to bed sooner than all the others. Very sweet calm birds I love them and seperating them was the best thing. Good luck. Tonya

It helps to know that it isn't just me doing something wrong. We really enjoy the breed and she is so sweet. Thank you for the advice and the websites.
I will just keep them seperate and work on having more docile chickens.
The RIR and sex link are great layers, but I want to have birds that I don't have to worry about bullying in the coops.

Thank you for this post. I have an Americana, an Orphington, and a Barred Rock, all 2.5 months old. I was going to add a
Polish because they look so neat, but reading this has really given me pause. Thanks!

I'm sooo glad to know that I am not the only one with this problem! We have 4 WCBP and 2 Red Stars. One of my Red Stars is relentless. I put on the first treatment of Blu-Kote yesterday and am waiting to see if that helps. We have 2 separate coops but they are in the same run. I will separate if I have to, but would love to work it out for them to be all together. I have even tried "spanking" the Red Stars when I catch them picking! LOL!! I have heard that Vicks Vapor Rub on the Polish heads will work...I may try that next.

I've tried everything from blukote to vicks. I even bought a bunch of rooster booster no peck lotions and paid a good amount for them and that didn't even work. Those top hats are just to tasty I guess.

Glad to see this post. I posted in the emergencies thread, but got no answers. My White Crested Polish has never been pecked on until yesterday. I think something else must have been wrong with him and as he was just sitting on the ground, was and easy target. I put him in a pen by himself and doctored his head. Couldn't get him to eat or drink and he died overnight. Can the pecking kill a polish because of the vaulted head?

Sorry about your Polish. It sounds like something else may have been wrong which made him the easy target. I am not sure what the exact structure of the knob is but I'm thinking the greatest damage would probably be a bleeding issue, not skeletal. Would be interested to hear what others think

It seems everyone is having the same sort of problem.

Polish are weak by nature but they are also very prone to illness and sickness, more so than most other breeds.

There are some breeds that are great with Polish but from what I hear it depends on the particular bird. Some will pick crests and others will show no interest. I had a Sultan rooster that was pecked bald on a snowy day in the middle of the winter. One of my most dominant hens pecked him and after I separated him for a few days, and put him back, it never happened again. We still don't know why to this day.

Sutillman-The vault on a Polish's head can also causes brain damage if it develops in a way it is not supposed to. I have a pullet right now who is pretty anti-social, not very responsive, and to boot, had some of her vault showing, bald, just above her nostrils. I think as a chick, maybe even a developing embryo, she must have suffered some minor damage. Her crest is the largest I have ever had on a Polish, which leads me to think brain damage. But I'm not going to cull her unless I know she is suffering.

Chances are, if your Polish roo was acting like a normal rooster before-hand, he had something else going on. However, he could have suffered from the aftermath of his attack. Or, he could have died of shock. It's a sad thing. Polish do best with their own kind. Like I have said before, Polish roosters are more prone to pecking. I rarely see a full grown hens and full grown rooster fight. He will lay low to whatever his hens want. But non-crested roosters will be the roosters to put their hens in their places. A rooster who can't see a threat will not attack it.

I have a WCP too. They did the head picking on her when her crest was starting to grow in, once they got out to the coop and free ranging it grew in nicely.
Now I have a different problem, she became scared of the roosters once they tried to "pay attention" to her. Now she screams and runs when they even look her way, which of course, causes the boys to chase her down and have a ride. It is usually the dominant one who gets to her first, then he stands on her till the others go away. So lately she just spends the whole day hiding. Which only makes the roosters chase her more when they do catch a glimpse.
I'm hoping she calms down and accepts the one rooster's presence. (once we get rid of the others, possibly tomorrow)

Here's to hoping!

Is anyone else having this problem too?
