Hi fam
Need some help with one of my ladies. She's and older girl, still bright eyed and alert but she's skinny as anything and her poo is a scary yellow and redish brown, fairly watery. To me that says liver/kidney failure? She eats but here and there but gets shoved over by the others when foods involved, not bullied just pushed about. Ive bought her in, had to cut poo and feathers from her backside. She had some serious daggs, I'll bathe her soon. Ive inherited these little feather bums and never had a flock this large before so I'm learning everyday.
Already emailed the vet with pictures etc, waiting for a call back. I thought seeing as the chooks and I are new here, there's no better way to introduce ourselves than with pictures of poo. Any suggestions on how I can help her?
***Update*** vet thinks it' something called coccidiosis. Have to medicate the whole flock individually for 4 days. DW it's oral! thank whoever's watching for that! Wish the girlies n fellas (and I) luck. That's a whole lot of chook chasing (17) great fitness tho!

I would jump to reproductive cancer. Sudden weight loss, plus poop like this are symptoms.

Consider putting her down, & doing a necropsy?

Hi yeah, it's hard to say how long the weight loss has been going on. But definitely caught me off guard. Had another hen who'd just had toe surgery, got all distracted with her and wasn't as vigilant with the others. Vet did get back to me and said it's quite possibly coccidiosis. I have to medicate them each day individually for 4 days. Medication is oral, thank whoever's watching for that! 17 chooks to catch each day. Great fitness at least! 😅

All chickens carry coccidiosis in their gut, but are usually immune to the strains they picked up when they were chicks. So, alot of the times, a small load of Coccidia are detected in stool, whether the chicken is healthy, or not.

Also you don't get yellow urates with Coccidiosis.

Weight loss can happen pretty quickly with cancer.

The yellow urates are very concerning, and usually do to liver failure secondary to cancer, egg yolk peritonitis, and fatty liver disease in laying hens. The blood and weight loss may be from cancer. It doesn’t hurt to either get a fecal float to rule out coccidiosis, or buy Corid/amprollium to treat them all for it. But I think your hen has much more wrong with her. If you lose her, getting a necropsy by vet college will identify what was wrong. Some do their necropsies at home where the abdominal organs are examined. We are glad to look at any pictures to help.

Hi, yeah I'm leaning these things as we (hens and I) go, just not fast enough. Sometimes feels like it's all happening at once, I really appreciate the help! Thank you. Unfortunately I found she passed some time during the night. When I bought her in she was so lethargic, didn't want treats but took her medicine ok. So I held her for a while, we almost fell asleep together. Then she perked up, decided my lap wasn't comfy anymore so I put her to bed with the other suspiciously thin hen I have also seperated. Will have her poo tested asap. Everything moves really slow where I live, although my vet is quickly learning that I don't let up. Lucky he keeps fowl himself. Anyway, I'd like to have them all tested if I could. Definitely upping my game joining this site. Still figuring how to be a little less um, emotional? It's so hard to not end up with full on tunnel vision over the smallest things. There's a fair bit of "give it ya best guess" a long with "do your homework". As a rule, I do not search the internet when there's something wrong with me. Web MD is the worst rabbit hole! Chickens however speak a different language. I'm well into chook country now so this is my crash course
