Sought after chicken breeds

The Sumatras are on the endangered list but I will not sell the roos. People normally want them for cock fighting. I sell straight run chicks for $5 and almost to laying hens for $15. I have no problem selling any of them.

So... This is my opinion and my recent observations since I am currently selling barnyard mixed chicks...

People seem to want either really good egg layers (leghorn, rhode island red etc) and or good dual birds like pure bred Brahmas, wyandottes and other common dual breeds.

I got a lot of people asking me for Leghorns. Sad because I have to often clarify that my "leghorns" are actually half Brahma half leghorn. Then they get turned off and look elsewhere. Lol im super small time amd im doing it for fun and the experience. I hope that someday I can do my own mini hatchery.

I think if you can focus on those common amd popular breeds, youre good for the start. Production breeds I mean. Some people like buying off local breeders.

A leghorn and Brahma would be an amazing mix. People sometimes do not make any sense. I have had people on waiting on chicks from me to hatch and they understand I do not and wall not try to sex them. I mean really who would not want to have more than one Brahma roo. They are sweet funny and such goobers at times. Granted they don't lay eggs but they are gorgeous birds. Any way Once they hatch and I contact the next in line I sometimes get the one ' ARE THEY HENS, I ONLY WANT HENS'. umm YOU KNEW THEY WERE STRAIGHT RUN BEFORE THEY HATCHED!. I love my birds and I keep my coops very clean. The little roo is Dominick. He is 9 weeks old. He is so handsome. The chicks I sell at the moment are Australorp and buff Orpingtons. both excellent year round layers, an egg a day. All my other birds are babies still.

So does anyone end up with a bunch of roos noone wants or do you find that its pretty easy to get rid of all birds bedore they are full grown. My only worry is I end up with a yard full of roos.

For me, that's easy. They are all destined for the pot at a certain point. I can try to sell, and sometimes do, but otherwise its food for family and friends.

Where I live I'm right next to the north so we can get a lot of breeds from there but breeds that r very popular right now is green and blue egg layers and silkies I had 7 people asking if I could get them some over the last 4 days

I don't but there's a place close that has small animal/poultry actions one a month so they get sold easily.
I honestly don't see how anyone can get stuck with cockerels/roosters if they didn't want. Too many people like to eat chicken.
Now if you're dead set on "I don't want them eaten" you're gonna have a hard time. If you expect to sell them for what some expect they're worth after getting attached to them. You're probably gonna have problems. I often see roosters on CL here for common breeds prices at $30 bucks. Not gonna happen. If you're in the suburbs where people don't know how or won't process a bird it might be a bit harder but someone will drive in if the price is right, free and/or especially if you have a few that need to go.

I dont care if they get eaten. I just wont process them myself because DH said no. Hes too soft hearted which i dont get cuz he eats lots of meat. My plan was always to raise layers to 3 or 4 years old then cull for canning.

But hes decided no. Lol

I dont even care about the $ if i could get rid of unwanted cockrels easily id list them for free.

I raise brahmas so a bunch of roos are great. They all get a long and are clowns and super sweet but super huge

In my experience, cockerels are not easy to get rid of.
