I have a hen with sour crop and I’ve read online that over the counter thrush medications (Monistat etc) can be administered. I’m confused as these medications are marketed as vaginal creams, applied to human skin. Can I just confirm that the recommendation is for the hen to ingest this?

Yes, it's for the hen to ingest. There's only one way to the crop, and that's through the beak.
Thanks for your reply! I think I was a little confused and thinking I was missing something, that maybe there was a medication to be taken orally for humans, as I could only come across the skin creams. Thank you again 😊

RAW honey is generally considered a helpful complementary home remedy for sour crop in chickens because of its natural antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antifungal properties, which can help slow the growth of yeast. It also provides much-needed energy for the chicken during recovery (after a 12-24 hr fast)

Hmm. But I often use honey in warm water to "proof" my yeast when making bread, and I sweeten and flavor that bread dough with honey as well. If the honey killed the yeast I would not end up with my light, fluffy loaves. So I'm a little confused.

Hello! As @BigBlueHen53 said, it's perfectly okay to give your hen some of that cream. I recently dealt with sour crop in my pullets and she even seemed to enjoy the cream and ate it on her own 😊 . It was recommended to me by one of the educators here on byc to administer 1/2 inch twice per day for sour crop. Best of luck!

Research has proven honey kills fungus which is what sour crop is.
Chicken sour crop is primarily a yeast infection, specifically caused by the fungus Candida albicans, which overgrows in the chicken's crop when normal gut flora is disrupted, leading to fermentation, a foul smell, and a squishy, fluid-filled crop. While it's a fungal organism, it's treated as a yeast infection (often called thrush in humans) and requires antifungal treatment like Nystatin.
