Please help! My Plymouth rock has had sour crop for nearly 3 months. I've taken her to the vet and all he could prescribe her was probiotics which didn't really help. CA doesn't allow poultry to be given antibiotics. I ordered Nystatin from a website and this too is not working. What else can I do for my poor girl?

Can you try miconazole perhaps? We have limited options here in the UK but I recently treated a hen for sour crop using Daktarin oral gel which has miconazole as the active ingredient.

Is it definitely sour crop? I'm assuming so if the vet agreed. How is her health otherwise? Do you know what may have caused it?

Please post some photos - the hen and her poop

Tell us how you are treating the crop issue. What is she eating, how old is she, have you tried a crop bra, does she lay eggs, anything inside the beak (canker/lesions/pasty material), can she eat/drink on her own, is she active, etc...?

Read this article and go by the treatment plan.

If antibiotics ARE needed (I’ve treated sour crop with Apple Cider Vinegar, Monistat, and the forced regurgitation method (last resort because this method could cause hen to breathe in infected liquid which could cause death)), you can purchase fish amoxicillin (I got mine from 1-800-PetMeds) and mix the powder with water and give 125 mL twice a day (I did this for a hen who I suspected was suffering from egg peritonitis). HOWEVER, you might be able to fix the problem without antibiotics. I also live in California and know the pain of trying to get medication for my chicken babies :barnie.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, definitely sour crop. She has lost some weight and is lethargic at times and has not laid any eggs in more than a month. I will try the miconazole, if possible to find out here.
