I was looking at the neato homemade feeders and waterers when I caught a reference to "post screws"in a how-to on the treadle feeder. I had thought to mention that the screws are termed "sex bolts" in the trade. In a subsequent post, the designer and builder ot the treadle feeder had made the correction himself so no need for me to show off my knowledge of the arcane.

I have a metal fabrication shop and often order parts from McMaster-Carr. For those unfamiliar with McMaster-Carr, you are in for a lot of fun. McMaster.com has both an online catalog and a regular print version. The latter might be called "The big yellow book", because it is just that. It has every type of hardware item you may imagine, from hydraulics, electrical, all sorts of fasteners, metals, plastics, and everything in between. It is an old-fashion hardware store in a book.

I find the print catalog very useful in that one may simply browse through it, searching for some bit, or that, for some project. Often, I won't know the name of an item. Sex bolts, for example, but I'll discover what I need and what it's called. Eureka! Many of my projects, either for myself or for a customer, may use hardware items meant for something else entirely, and the ability to browse a paper catalog allows me to find that special item, whatever it's original purpose might be.

So, check out Mcmaster-Carr for those bits and pieces. You may pay with a credit card or have an open account. If I place an order (online, email, or phone) before 6 pm, it will be at my door the next day. I live about 90 miles from the LA warehouse so UPS ground is really over-night at ground rates. Be sure to ask for a print catalog.
