Sourdough Hens

Here's some more pictures of Chainsaw. Does she look quail (Ml +Co) to you guys? Is she just a gold duckwing? Could she be barred and quail?! If not why do her hackle feathers look barred?! What does a barred quail chicken even look like?! :barnieGenetics are very complicated...

Am I imagining the mini bars on her hackle feathers?

I just realized the Pav's foot feathering is recessive, not dominant!
So in 1-2 years the heaviest, hardiest Pav I will breed to the F3 muffed rose combed offspring of Abby and then I will breed the best offspring of that cross together and to the Cr girls. Then I should have some feather-footed muffed fluffy chunky chickens.

I will only do this cross if the Pavs do well this winter. I am very curious if the feather footed chickens will do better than the non feather footed on the sand in cold windy weather. I'm using sand because I've found that the hens seem happier and healthier on sand than on straw, however it is colder on their feet.

Reminder to myself: Abby has one pea comb gene, one barring gene, at least one silver gene, at least one mahogany gene, and one Pg gene (from Hawk.)

Chainsaw was being a menace today to the other hens! She finally likes me, though. I think she's molting early and was grumpy 🤣 Maybe she knows her babies are hatching a few weeks. All four of her eggs look great!

Onwards embryos!

I can't believe I found a crested gecko meme! Must be good luck for the crested chickies!

I think about 10? of the 17 eggs are viable? There were a couple that looked like early quitters. Also an eggy with a very active chick and weird looking aircell? 2 of Chainsaw's look good!

This Wybar picture looks a lot like one of my rose combed Cr girls, except my girl has a darker chest. Can you see what I meant about the feathers being very "smoky"? Guessing my Cr girl is barred and got the pattern gene from either Velociraptor or Vengeance. I got some cool pictures today of the hens that I'll post tomorrow!

Eggies go into lockdown on the 1st or 2nd!

Reading through your thread; your breeding project is very interesting. Lots of fun patterns, and lots of crazy gene combinations! :D

I'm in cold-weather too, currently trying to create a new hardy flock of pure bred Icelandics, with the best cold features. It'll be interesting to follow your progress and see who does best in your climate!

Thanks for the comment! I love seeing peoples' thoughts :)

Iceys are pretty cool. I have a hen, Chainsaw, that reminds me of one. She's flighty but is very bossy. It took me 4 years for her to like me 🤪 Now she attacks hens who try to go near me lol

Some eggies should pip/hatch today! #13 (unknown mom) is doing great. Very wiggly lil' guy (I need a disaster name!) I only have 5/17 eggs that look good 😭 I'm going to get a new incubator this summer if it keeps this up. I'm going to get a couple Govees to check for cold/hot spots. I had a Govee, but it died just before I started the bator. Ughhh! I may just order some Icelandics/ Swedish Flower Hens/ and a Cream Legbar hen from a nearby hatchery. I still want Pavlovskaya, but if my bator is already having issues with normal eggs then I don't think it will do well with shipped eggs :(

I need mottling/crests (Icelandics or Swedish Flower Hens) and the inhibitor of gold gene (Cream Legbar hen) for the "breed" I'm creating. I've thought about using Speckled Sussex or Jubilee Orpingtons but I already have too much Mahogany in the program. I'm picturing a lemon millefleur with hysterical mottling or mottling on a pattern (quail? double lacing? stippling......) The ig gene would make the base more yellowy and natural looking. Does anyone know what Mahogany + the ig gene would look like? I'm pretty sure the Mahogany would "cancel" out the ig. Let me know if I'm wrong!

This is what I'm picturing but with more uneven/ hysterical mottling to create a better camo pattern and to look awesome! The base color is good, though. Or the mottling on a patterned/stippled bird. It honestly depends on what I'm able to breed and get to type first

Credit to https://sedgwickcommon.co.uk/lemon-millefleur/ There are some awesome chickens on there lol

I'm going to hatch HawkxAbby eggs later this year in hopes of getting a whatever she is (Mh + silver + Pg + duckwing base?) I really hope I get a muffed rose comb roo from the Cr girls or Vengeance to replace Abby because he is not very good at the whole being polite to the hens thing. If I have to I'll just replace him with a rose combed roo or muffed/single combed roo OR a muffed/crested/single-combed roo. I will not feel bad when I eat him.... Honestly I might just have two roosters if there are two good ones.

I'm going to start another batch of eggs April 15.

Please let me know if my writing looks funny (I have ADHD and sometimes I just "splat" words on the page). I'm trying to get better at writing more scientifically.
