Maurepas, Louisiana
Hi y’all. We are in South Louisiana. We are on Bear Island in Maurepas and most of us have little usable land –just a little dry frontage with a house over water, the rest of the acreage being swampy for most of the year. (Maurepas is pronounced something like maw-rah-paw or mar-paw depending on who you talk to.

). Since moving here this is my first attempt at having chickens. We moved here a little over 2 years ago from Frost, and missed the fresh eggs and fun of having a yard full of birds. So now I am starting over with bantams. My new chicks are in a brooder (large dog kennel lined with cardboard, heat lamp hanging inside, and in the dining area). In a few weeks they will move outside to the small high ground area, roosting in converted rabbit cages equipped with nest boxes and limbs for roosting surrounded by fencing for a little foraging space during daytime. We have many predators including hawks, raccoons, alligators, etc.. So it will be a challenge to keep them safe. One of our dogs just came back from a swim with several puncture wounds and nasty scrapes.
Glad to be back with chickens and on BYC!

mourninglory, you are about 20 minutes away from me--I am right in the middle of Metairie. And yes, momoftwinsinwi, it is running in the high 90's with a heat index in the 110's. However, in December, I will be mowing my lawn in shorts!

Thanks for the welcome everyone. This is a great forum. I was here several years ago and it's good to be back. I only recognize a few names, but hope to get to know everyone. With a brooder full of banties and a bator full of quail eggs, I'm sure to be asking advice.
Harv681 you are close by so maybe we will be doing some bird or egg trading in the future.

Hi everyone! We're from South Louisiana... Erath - where Hurricane Rita flooded just about everyone in our town. Two years later we are back in our home... my hubby is recently disabled and while we are waiting for his healing, he is raising chickens at home. I'm new to this site... we purchased 20 baby chicks on March 26. They were 3 days old. We just started getting eggs last Sunday... first week we had a total of 21 eggs. This week our count is 9 so far... Monday we picked up one egg that was almost 2 inches long and really skinny. It was cracked right at the tip... so we didn't want to eat it... I cracked it and surprise... it had two yolks... I was impressed. We started out with 20 chickens and lost 3... so here is our flock.. 3 Plymoth Rocks and 14 Production Reds... and we had to adopt an older hen from Poppie's house, because his son's dogs got into the chicken cage and killed all but one. So Henrietta found a home with us. I'm going to try to updoad a few pictures but I'm not sure if I can figure it out.
I'm HAVING TROUBLE TRY TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO POST A PICTURE... I'D LOVE TO SHARE A PIC OF MY FUNNY LONG SKINNY EGG.
