South Louisiana Temps Dropping & Chicken Owners

It was 21 in Houston, Texas, last night. That is in the city, too, and it is always warmer than the surrounding area. Yesterday when it was so cold and overcast all day long the girls just came out and seemed very down - just stood around looking moody. They are much happier today with the sun out. They are sunning themselves trying to catch the little heat available. Poor darlings are little greenhouse flowers!

Surprisingly some are still laying. Australorp, 4-5/week, Orloff 4-5/week and Barnevelder 2/week, maybe a Delaware and/or a SLWyandotte in there occasionally, Spec Sussex maybe 3-4/week. EE and Brabanter have gone into hard molts and look miserable, Splash Maran seems to have quit.

Our low last night was 8 degrees. I worried about the chooks, but they were fine. A little sparrow got caught in the coop last night, so they had a sleepover. I can't help but wonder what that little sparrow thought about spending the night out of the wind and with strange bedfellows.

It will be 27 degrees at midnight and 21 degrees by 6AM tomorrow morning. it's almost over. the low's for next saturday will be 54 degrees. gotta love Louisiana weather.

From your neighbor to the west, I just wanted to hop over and tell ya'll it won't be long now! Temps rising a bunch next week!

yeah, just when it was trying to dry up. it's so messy over here when it rains. the ducks like to dig holes in the ground for some reason. i still don't understand why they do that.

kuntrygirl- congratulations on your lamb! What a sight that must have been, she'll be cold-adapted in no time. You must choose a name that represents this winter event!

The savage part of the weather is now heading our way, and I hope it leaves you...what a terrible time it has been, so let's hope it will prepare everyone for a future contingency, though I hope it never happens again.
