South Texas Chicken Man

@STxChickenman If you are willing to make the 2 hour drive to San Antonio and bring a friend, here are some prebuilt and framed out ready made chicken coops.

Looks like something I would love to make a coop out of.

Edit--Those crates look so good I might need to phone a friend 7'x4'x4' could double stack em around some 4x4's concreted into the ground.....this looks too good to pass on.

Thanks for the tips. I have already made plans on building out my chicken coop and the only part of the plan that I am waffling around on is whether to put money into having a concrete floor poured. The dimensions of my coop are going to be 21' x 14' so I'm not sure that I want to spend the dollars on getting this done but now is the time to think about it I suppose.

I ordered 20 American Bresse chicks last night and will hopefully get them in December. We'll see how that goes....I should be ready for them at that time. I will more than likely order a few other breed chicks so that I can get going with having chickens around but will wait until I am completely set and ready to go. I am enjoying the though of getting back into having chickens...it's great fun.

Well since Hurricanes are a possibility, were I doing it myself all of my storage sheds are on concrete pads bolted on to the pad with hurricane bolts and roofs are secured with hurricane straps(?), but hey its only a 1 in 8 chance per year of taking a hit. Going cheap doesn't hurt either especially since you are just getting back into the lifestyle and chicken just might not be your thing. I imagine if you built it with a 7-8 foot ceiling you could always pour a pad later and retrofit for hurricanes as desired at that point. That is if that is why you are thinking of pouring a pad in the first place. Best of luck and we would love to see your diagrams or any other details you are considering.

Nice you made me look up the Bresse breed and I had read about it previously. Apparently those are going to be some good eating for you. Have you read up on exactly how the French raise their birds apparently from what I have read it is a specialist skill.

The only thing that I have read is that you take the ones that you are preparing for butchering out of the pasture a few weeks prior to slaughter time and fatten them up with milk and grains, (I will use heavy cream to get them more fat), so that you can increase the marbling of fat in their meat. I am curious about the flavor of the chicken.

Bress are good heavy breeds and mostly for meat. I had them and the white ones are very good egg layers too.

The big problem with them is that they eat a lot of feed! They will cost a lot in feed and have a poor feed to egg conversion ratio

You do not have to do the pasture stuff for those you use for meat. Just feed them a good grain soaked in milk(goat milk is a good choice) for two weeks before butchering them
