what is the best thing for a chicken to lay eggs in hay or maybe soft bedding for a horse? what do they rather?

I think the two most popular things are hay/straw of maybe pine shaving. Mine seem to do fine with hay. Not sure what the chickens prefer - probably whatever is in their nest boxes. I just find hay or straw cleaner and easier to replace.

First of all welcome to BYC!!! Its all preferance I dont like the smell of hay so I prefer the white pine shavings but you might not. If you have horse bedding laying around try that, or vice versa with hay

At Red Barn Farms we use fresh straw in the spring & summer then switch to pine needles and fallen leaves in the Autumn of the year. Autumn marks the nest boxes cleaning time and that's when we replace the bedding. The dead brown pine needles are produce a nice clean scent.
