Hi y'all. We have 12 Buff Orpington hens about 5 months old now and just starting to give a few eggs. They are beautiful and very friendly. Hubby and I get a lot of enjoyment from them. We have had chickens before, but they were meat birds, so we didn't allow ourselves to get attached like we are to these girls. I am looking forward to learning more about chickens.

Welcome aboard. I started raising chicks in December and have had trouble with not getting attached myself. I ended up with a cockerel heavy batch of straight run RIR (10 C, 6 P) never again. If I order chicks I will select pullets only. I know there's still a chance of getting cockerels, but hopefully not 65% (or whatever the math is on that, lol).

I did manage to find someone to take the excess males so I narrowly escaped having the cull them myself in my first few months. The lady who is taking them is a single mother who gets excess males to help feed her family. Knowing that my dilemma helped someone else made the whole situation more bearable.
