Southern Dealing with Winter

So, usually, I don't worry about winter besides closing up the coop's windows. This week is supposed to get down to 9 degrees F. It will probably be 15 or colder in their house. Should I be putting fleece on their roost or something??

Keep the coop dry and ventilated.

If the roost is wide enough for them to cover their feet you should be fine.

Be careful closing windows.... Unless there is a draft on the roost I would leave them open, closed coop can lead to frostbite.

Ventilation is important, but not a wind blowing over them while roosting. Having a draft free area, and ventilation on the south side, or well above the birds, is best. You must already be dealing with keeping the water unfrozen, and if not, that's important!

OK, their water is good (check) and I stopped all roost level potential drafts (coop has upper ceiling ventilation). Thanks so much for the quick information!

They'll probably be fine. I was worried when it got down below 20ºF here, and mine were fine, then it got down to single digits, still fine, then -7ºF yesterday morning, and they still went outside to peck around.. Today which began with -2º, got back up to 20º and the chickens were out thoroughly enjoying the " heat wave"

They'll be fine, it got down to 15 here and everyone survived. This is a couple of the hens and the roos first winter so i am getting some major stink eye in the morning but they're fine.
