Hmm, awkward... My first post in a social forum.

For those of you thinking 'Chooks? What are those? It's just a Canadian/Australian/New Zealand term for chickens. We have hens and (too many) roosters.

1. Chicken history: Infrequent encounters until 6 years ago. Found Paradise, became the wife, & he had Chickens. And Ducks. And a Turkey. I have learned a LOT, mostly from this forum and others like it. Thank you all! (there are lots of sad and happy stories in those 6 years)

2. How many? Over 2 years old: 4 roosters and 21 hens. 14 weeks old today: 15. Supposedly all female. However, 2 are for-sure-crowing-and-dancing-with-classic-saddle-an-hackle-feathers-Roosters, and there are probably 3 or 4 more.

3. Breeds? A lot. When I came to Paradise, we had Houdan, Blue polish crosses, Mille Fleur d'Uccle, frizzles & who knows what else, we've had game roosters & hens, RI reds, cochins, Orpingtons, Welsummers, white leghorns, silver leghorn, various bantams and lots of indiscriminate mixes. Many were rescues. And too many were "I found whichever-hen on a nest in the bamboo with 19 eggs in it...."

At one point we had 60 chooks. Of that 60, 20 were roosters.

Of the babies, we ordered 3 random easter eggers, and 2 of each: Green Queen EEs, cream legbars, buckeyes, faverolles, BL polish, & mottled Houdans.

4. My favorite things about owning chickens? The chickens themselves. My little dinosaurs.
Oh. And the eggs, of course.

5. Other hobbies: cooking, reading, some needle crafts, reading about chickens, gardening, and reading.

6. Other pets? 2 dogs, 2 cats, 5 ducks, a random peahen that showed up in our (7ft fenced) chicken pen in March, and 'pet' roadrunners that show up with their babies for mealworm snacks at feeding times.

7. How'd I find BYC? Researching & reading about chickens. I spent 10 years working in veterinary clinics, and I kept coming back for the always thorough & concise information.
