It can be dangerous, especially starting out, but most riding arenas are going to start you on a very "kid friendly" horse and be sure that you have a helmet and all that stuff. the place I went to didn't require helmets they just strongly advised them. I always forgot though.
The fact you are still alive just proves that it is safe

Yeah I still remember my training pony, he was so sweet. My horses aren't really beginner horses 😕

and every single time a horse almost reared, which was once, I just had to turn there head towards me because I knew it would stop him from rearing and everything was fine
