I think it's great that you want to preserve the shell. I've never tried the drying out method, but I've blown out plenty of eggs.

I have a collection of the biggest, smallest, prettiest and oddest eggs my girls have laid. My favorite is the still completely shelled egg within another egg, laid by Quinn, my runner duck who produces greenish eggs. The color on her egg-in-an-egg was a deeper green than anything else she's ever laid.
