Special Treats!!

My girls love bread. Pretty much everyone has bread make sure you make it really small. You can also feed them egg shells ,but crush them up really small, because then if you put a big part of their shell in they will start to eat their own eggs right when they lay it. Plus, since chickens dont chew their food the egg bit will go and cut up all of the big bits. Crushed up oyster shells do the same but you dont have to buy the egg shell. My ladies love it. But they dont know they are eating their own eggs;) oyster shells you should be able to buy in pet stores . Good Luck!

I feel like I punish my hens compared to all of what you are all putting. Besides from the normal corn I feed them bird seed and bread. They go mad for it! As soon as I open the outhouse door they come running. I used to feed them boiled veggie peelings but they stopped eating it as much because they have the run of the whole garden.

I've just made up a treat of peanut butter mixed with seeds. I put it in a bowl on top of boiling water to make the melt the peanut butter a bit and then left it in the bottom of a bottle in the fridge overnight. Hopefully they like it. I've read not to give them much peanut butter due to the salt content so if any of you have any recipes for homemade treats that won't cost a fortune (maybe out of things that we tend to have in our house) I would greatly appreciate it :)

Zucchni, cantaloupe, strawberries, grapes, lettuce, yogurt, bread, crackers, cucumbers, eggs, egg shells.

I look for the discount produce at the store, especially bagged salad. My girls come running when I shake the bag and say "any one want salad. " Any produce except potato or their skins, it's in the arsenic family. They also get the crushed and dried egg shells.I read to many meal worms can cause kidney problems, not sure if they are the same as wax worms. Good luck!

Reading this makes me worried. My chicks are 6 -7 weeks old. I have TRIED to offer them treats but they are not the slightest bit interested. I've tried fruit and lots of leafy greens from the veggie patch. They won't even eat bread or sultana cake I offered them. Could they simply be too young?
As I child I remember out chickens eating everything! With 2 young children we have a lot of wasted food I was hoping the chickens would eat in addition to their crumbles.

Did you have to teach them to eat these foods?

a word of caution. the more yummy food you expose them. the more they will expect it and be unhappy if they don't get it

Well, my chickens like any table scraps of fruit and veggies. Potatoes CAN KILL a chicken, so DO NOT FEED THEM ANY... not even the skin. They especially love tomatoes, and tomato worms as well (the pests that suck the plant's juices). They also love bugs and crushed up egg shell. In their feed I give them the egg shell for protein, but the shells are small so they can't tell if it's their own eggs. Also, yogurt with the active enzymes works well in the morning. I get the Mountain High kind and mix it in their feed of pellets. I mix it well so that each bite they get the nutrients of the yogurt instead of just leaving globs of it in their food dish. Mine love spinach and go CRAZY for the grapes that grow on our arbor that is in their coop area. I catch a few up there a day since they love them so much! None of them get hurt since the grapes have so much dead growth, though. The also love lettuce, apples, cooked spaghetti, bananas, berries like strawberries and blue berries, breads, etc. They go crazy for almost anything... but carrots.
