Love our 9 Speckled Sussex. We were to have all pullets but turns out we have two roos. The first to crow too. We bought him on April 6. We believe they may have been almost 7 days old at that time. 12 weeks now.

I used to have 3 but one was killed by a cat and one snuck it's way into an area that it shouldn't have got into, tried to find a way out, jumped up, and hung itself. I was heart broken to lose the two. Now my Biggin is my only SS, so eventually I plan on buying some more. She is the only chicken breed I have one of.

The one that got killed by a cat had gotten so used to me coming out and letting them out during the day. I assume that it heard the cat walking and thought it was me and got a little too close to the door and the caught bit it by the head and pulled it out. At first I thought it was a raccoon and then I saw the cat running off. It hurts to have to clean up the remains of an animal you cared for..

These are pictures of Biggin! The second one is my profile picture. Her name is Biggin because one of her sisters were named Tiny.

I cannot imagine how hard that was. In SC we had 5 killed by a roaming dog pack and it caused our Barred Rock Rooster (Colonel) and a young Welsumer cockerel to fly off over a field in the woods. We could never find either. Colonel was a terrific gentleman to his girls. Beautiful too.

You Speckled Sussex are beautiful. It is our first time having them and are loving them.

I hate losing animals. It had to be horrible to lose so many, I'm sorry

Losing that SS to the cat was the worst loss with an animal I have ever had. I was crying the whole time I was cleaning up her blood and remains.

Colonel is an adorable name!!

I am thinking of pure breeding Speckled Sussexes because they are such sweet and beautiful birds.
