We just had our broody Buff Orpington hen (Linda’s Stewart) hatch 6 chicks. She is in a coop and run with one Speckled Sussex roo with 10 Isa Brown hens and 7 Speckled Sussex hens. From the color of the eggs they all looked like they were laid by Isa Brown hens as our Speckled Sussex hens lay a lighter color egg and not as large. 4 of the 6 chicks have a chipmunk pattern and two are light in color with a few marks that are more rusty color like an Isa Brown chick. Is it possible to have this color difference if they are all the mix between the two breeds?

Just checked and our araucana/silverrudd blue hen Esperanza Essie for short) has 4 mix breed eggs developing. (Tis the season to go broody here.) I miss my Essie she is so sweet and would fly up to me for treats but now she is broody she is a screamer when you come near. I know that one egg is from a Welsummer, two others are from CCL hens and the last one is either from a Buff Orpington or New Jersey Giant. The papa’s are one of the following CCL, Araucana/Silverrudd Blue or Welsummer. So it is definitely some interesting possibilities. If all goes well we should have hatched chicks around the 18th.

Update photos of broody hatched chicks. It never stops amazing me how fast they grow. I do not know how everyone gets such good photos. These little chicks are quick and with mom it is near impossible to catch them as she is ready to defend.

I think Leghorn. Body morphology and single floppy comb make her that. There are brown leghorns as well ... she could be a mix of white and brown with yellow legs. Is her skin yellow under them feathers?
