Not sure if this is even possible but it's the only explanation I can come up with.
Ok, first off, I spend way more time than I should obsessing over my chickens, their eggs, and their laying habits, I know, but it's like Easter every single time I open that nest box and see those eggs in there. lol!
So, here's my issue. I have a very motley coop of chickens laying a lovely assortment of egg colors and sizes. I know exactly who lays which egg. Even my two EEs I know by the texture of their identically colored blue eggs. One has little bumpies at one end and the other is always normal and smooth. And my two Sebrights as well. One lays a matte finished egg and the other a much more glossy egg.
Several times a week I will find a weird squishy, sometimes without a shell and sometimes with a very soft leathery shell egg which I can identify as my Speckled Sussex's egg because of it's size and color (when it has a shell) Sometimes this strange egg will be in the bottom of the run as if the chickens came out in the morning and it just sort of fell out of the poor girl. And sometimes it'll be under the roost bar in the morning when I let them out or at night when I check on them before I go to bed, again, like it just sort of fell out. Then, later on in the day my Speckled Sussex will proceed to lay another perfectly formed, perfectly shelled but slightly larger than bantam sized egg.
She and my other 3 pullets are all about six months old, being hatched on Oct 2 of last year. All four started laying within a month of each other and have been laying for close to 2 months now I guess. The other three, a Welsummer, and 2 Easter Eggers are now laying a decent medium bordering on large sized egg. The Speckled Sussex's eggs are, as I'd said before, slightly larger than Bantam sized.
Is it possible that this girl is pushing 2 eggs through at a time every time she lays? That the first is being pushed through quickly and just sort of pooping out all squishy and incomplete to be followed later on by another still small but perfectly shelled and formed egg later in the day? And if so, is this also possibly the reason for her eggs remaining so small when her 3 sisters are laying larger and larger eggs as they settle into their first laying cycle?
If so, is this likely to continue? Should I worry more about her becoming eggbound in the future? Are there any other concerns with her or anything I can do to fix the problem?
Thanks in advance for reading my long winded little ramble here and thanks again to anybody who can give me any insight into this interesting occurrence.
