Some of you may have seen my previous post on these speckled sussex chicks. 4 were definitely cockerels but I managed to get 2 pullets - or so I thought. Unfortunately the one that was definitely a pullet was attacked by a fox, which leaves me with one. However she's looking more like a cockerel these days :( I've attached some recent photos (first 3 photos). She's about 12 weeks old. There's also a comparison with her sister (sister in front, chicken in question in back, last photo ).

Thanks everyone :)

Ahh, just as I was dreading :hit doubly devastated now my only girl got eaten.

Thanks for the fast replies guys.
Definitely cockerel.

I had a similar thing happen to me last year. I hatched 12 silkie chicks, raised them. Most turned out to be cockerels but 3 seemed like pullets at 3-4 months old. The one that was definitely a pullet was killed by my dog. Later it turned out the other 2 "pullets" were both cockerels... So I know how it feels to lose your only pullet :hit

It's the worst luck, isn't it?

Will the cockerel be ok on his own for now? I'm going to try and keep him, and he'll have 6 hens to look after when he grows up. They are not so nice to him now but I guess that will change.

hi. My speckled Sussex is 7-8 weeks old. I noticed the comb was starting to get bigger than the rest of the chicks, at least more prominent than the others and noticed the waddles. I ordered from Mcmurray Hatchery, and also ordered as a female.
I saw your first photos I think on another post. But wanted to see if yours looked like mine.
It’s not extremely large, very light pink, not red.

I think it's trickier when you don't have another chick to compare to. I've attached a photo of mine at 7 weeks - left is a boy, right is a girl. The second photo is the same chick as in this thread, when his comb was still pink with small wattle, who turned out to be a boy.

I’ll try and get a photo of mine with the other one. We do have two. It’s just hard getting the second in the same photo. I’ll work on that today. The other has a comb showing but is a little smaller

Do you have a photo at 12-15 weeks?
