Spin off: What's the LEAST you've spent on a chicken? :)

$2 each.

Has anyone ever been paid to take a chicken off someone's hands? Since a negative number is not a zero...

Last year I was at a big neighborhood fair and I ran across a pretty scuzzy homeless guy who had a sad looking pullet in a milk crate. She had a pizza crust int he crate and no water. The guy said he'd found her walking through a homeless camp the night before. I didn't have any money on me, but I traded him the big chocolate cupcake a friend had just given me.

My firend lived cloe by and had a unused dog run so I took her the pullet. After drinking a ton and eating a bunch of breakfast cerceal she really perked up. Last I heard she and her two new roomies were layign well and very happy.

So I I paid one chocoloate cupcake for a pullet.

The first time I ever went to a poultry auction (and the only birds I ever bought at an auction) were my cheapest.
I gave .35 each for 15 Easter Egger chicks at an auction 4 years ago. Three died because a box fell on them

The other 12 lived.
9 were hens 3 were roosters!
The ones I did not sell, I still have to this day and they lay the biggest eggs
