One of my two day old buttons is having a problem. His legs aren't working correctly. For a while he tried to pull them up under him, but he is no longer even trying. The other babies are starting to peck him (at first they were really supportive & tried to get him up). I am guessing it is time to cull him, but the thought of cutting the little head off with poultry shears is making me physically ill. DH won't do it

I don't think I can...........

It's so tiny... how would I splint them? The legs look deformed to me.... like they aren't the same length. Does that change the opinion of trying to save it?

i would still splint them and if nothing improves you might have to cull the poor little dear

might want to try medical tape to splint them. with chickens you would use a band-aid and put the sticky parts around the legs and stick the ends to the padded part of the band-aid. might be kinda hard because i know how tiny the buttons are. just try it and see if she improves

dont you mean "terramycin?" and if so that's an antibiotic it wont do anything for that button chick other than make it immune to the antibiotic. Giving any living thing an antibiotic for no reason will make the animal immune to it, and when the person really does have a sick critter the antibiotic won't work. Deffinatly not a good thing to reccomend and should only be used when the animal/bird for sure needs an antibiotic. (just a FYI).

Are there pictures somewhere of how to splint? I think I have seen some before... Is it ok if the sticky is touching the skin?

I leave for the beach tomorrow... I wonder if DH can keep up with this. Do you change the bandaid daily?

If nothing else, maybe trying something will keep him around another day & I won't have to be the one to cull

I know I need to be able to, but it really kills me to think about it. Will I ever be able to raise poultry for anything other than eggs & enjoyment?

I think I have decided against splinting. It hasn't shown any interest in food or water. A minute ago it started breathing very heavily & is now on its side barely breathing. It seems peaceful, but should that change I will cull.

The two others are doing well & what I thought was picking was bringing it food trying to get it to eat. The one I think may be a roo just starting calling over the sick one. I think I'm in love with these social critters!

poor little thing. button quail are such fragile, tiny little things. I'm glad the others are doing well! it is good to hear that you can remember your other little ones rather than hurt over one that didn't make it. it is sad, but the others need your love, care and protection
