My dd's kindergarten class is hatching chicks.

During the night last night, four of them hatched.

Three are wobbling around the brooder, chirping away. I came in to visit, and watch. The fourth chick seemed to have trouble walking. I've only gotten chicks that were at least 3 days old, so these brand new ones are unfamiliar to me.

Do you think this chick is just getting its' legs working, or could it possibly have splayed legs?

Exactly how old is he?

Treat him with the band-aid method. Be sure to stay with him for a while after putting the band-aid on,

and be sure he's not tumbling around everywhere, and seperate him from others. If he tumbles in his water bowl,

he could drown.

Everyone left the school at 4pm yesterday, and at 8:15am this morning when they came in, the chick was hatched. So, the picture was taken when the chick was less than 24 hours old.

Keep in mind they aren't MY chicks. They're chicks being hatched at my child's school. The teachers have never seen chicks hatched before.

If you all think there's an issue, I can tell them to call the person who lent them the incubator and eggs, and hopefully she knows how to treat. If not, I can step in, but I don't want to rush in taking charge when it's really not my deal, you know?

I would also recommend the bandaid method to the teacher as scissorchick posted. The sooner you treat the better. From the photo it looks like one of its litte feet might need treating too? I couldn't find the link for you when I looked but I had great success from a BYC suggestion to cut a little splint from cardboard (such as a cereal box), spreadiout the little toes and tape them to the splint with a bandaid.
We have a year old hen lovingly named Paddlefoot who you would never know had a thing wrong with her feet.
Good luck. What a great experience for your daughter's class.
