Splinter in Foot

I have a hen that has been limping. I looked at the foot today and It appears that there is a splinter broke off in the middle of the foot. Any ideas on how to get it out?

I would guess that human first aid rules can apply here. Soak the affected foot in warm water for a few minutes (hold her down!). The wood will swell up and you should be able to push or gently tweeze the splinter out.
