Split batch

How did the rest of your eggs do with hatching in the egg carton? I’ve got shipped eggs with saddled air cells, and I’m trying to decide whether to try to hatch any that make it to lockdown with the egg carton method

I've tried multiple times with shipped eggs, but I found that chicks will usually end up positioned if they do not get sufficient turning in the day between 3-13. I had a hatch with automated horizontal turning for the first 10 days, then put into cartons and hand turning (while upright) till lockdown, then laying on their side for lockdown. They had really bad aircells, that fixed themselves and got 5 hatch from 7 fertile eggs.

Another hatch, I tried egg cartoning them (and hand turning upright, 5 times a day) for the whole incubation. Only one managed to pip, and had to be assisted for the hatch. When investigating afterwards, I found that the other 8 eggs that had got to lockdown, were all mal-positioned (I think this is caused by insufficient turning, causing them to get stuck to the membrane and unable to alter position for hatch), they had drowned in the egg as they couldn't pip through. Really sad.

My best hatch was when I just put the shipped eggs straight into the incubator, let the automatic turner do it's thing, and checked for loose air sacs at day 10. If they were loose, they got put in a egg carton and hand turned for 5-6 days, checked the air sac, and put back onto the horizontal turner if rectified. I had 100% of the fertile shipped eggs hatch! So it may take some experimentation to get a good hatch for you and your incubator. So glad that you managed to hatch your cute wyandottes :love

The first chicks that hatched crawled all over them. I trimmed the carton down to allow max airflow and they got knocked over immediately.

I agree. I had to assist 4 of mine and only 2 made it because of low pips.

So sorry that you lost a few! But I'm glad you got 2 :jumpy Really hope your next hatch will be more successful, I felt really sad after my bad hatch (were I only got one hatch assisted and 8 drowned), but I'm glad I persisted as I now have 10 beautiful cuties currently!

Shipped eggs are a carp shoot for so many reasons!

Having a very good incubator is key for hatching them
